The Parts...
The first part to arrive: the LEDs. Cree XM-L T5-bin neutral-white LEDs on star MCPCBs. (MCPCB = Metal-Core Printed Circuit Board, which is kind of a misnomer since there's not a "PC board" so much as a conductive trace between two layers of insulation glued onto an aluminum-sheet base.) These should be good for a little under 900 lumens each, so the pre-pro build should be right around 3,600 lumens.
We'll also be checking out a new product called SinkPad. It's a new LED mount technology
for the Cree XM-L and other power LEDs that transfers heat more efficiently than typical
MCPCBs. Hopefully this will mean the production WHOA!BEAM will be even more efficient.
More on that as it develops...
The next item to arrive: the heatsinks! The battery is AA size, and is there as a size
reference. The sinks are each about 10" wide, 3" tall, and almost 3" deep, and should keep
the LEDs suitably chilled.
A stick of rectangular aluminum tubing arrived today, and it'll become the housing for
the AC wiring and related components.
After lopping off a chunk of the tubing, we laid out most of the parts to produce this,
which is a rough idea of what the WHOA!BEAM will look like as an assembled unit. The top
bits with the holes are where the LEDs and their optics will reside. The bottom bit,
the chunk of rectangular tubing, will house the power supply for the LEDs. It'll be
secured roughly where it's shown, where it will also help protect the heatsink fins.
